With the on-going deficit battle in D.C, I’ve read various news articles of governmental bloat and the need to rein in spending. Now at a time of unprecedented economic malaise, with over 13 Trillion dollars of government debt, it is ironic that our government is even considering more spending. However, taking a look around me, it is fairly evident that if the Government ever stopped their spending binge, there would be blood in the streets here in New York. I’ve realized that a huge number of people around me get their bread and butter from the government whether directly or indirectly, and here’s how:
1. Welfare Recipients
In the New York Metro Area, something like 10-15% of the population is wholly dependent on welfare. After generations of living in the housing projects and feeding on government corn, I suspect that many welfare recipients have simply lost all ability to meaningfully provide for themselves. If these people don’t get their government rations for more than a few days, they would likely go on a looting rampage akin to the fine citizens of New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina.
2. Unemployment Insurance Recipients and Illegal Migrant workers
Something like 10% of New York Metro’s population is out of work and receiving unemployment insurance checks right now. Most of them have been out of work a year or more. Some of these people had productive/useful jobs which were outsourced to lower wage nations. But quite frankly, many of the unemployed used to provided unskilled labor in retail/service jobs that never had much real value in the first place, and of course was the first to be cut in the great recession of 2009. Now if their checks ever stopped, I would expect these people to find whatever jobs they could get their hands on. But unfortunately the only jobs available in such numbers would be low-paying menial labor jobs. Jobs that are currently taken by a vast underclass of Illegal Migrant Laborers. The Illegals are at least 10% of the population around here, and if left without jobs (and thus food), they would most certainly riot. So if those government UI checks ever stopped, either we have mass rioting or a trail-of-tears style mass deportation!
3. Government Employees
Amazingly, 10% of the city’s working age population is employed by the Government. These government jobs are REAL NICE. Government workers can expect working benefits that are now almost unknown in the private sector. Pensions, gold-platted medical insurance, and guaranteed annual raises makes for a happy public-sector worker. On the down side, great benefits do not resolve into great work productivity. With the exception of some essential services such as police, sanitation, or the fire department, most government sectors are incredibly inefficient. Take for example, the public school system around here. The quality of high school students turned out by the New York City Schools is ranked somewhere around 3rd world nations like China or Albania. If government workers are forced into the private sector, many if not most of them would be entirely uncompetitive. An organized, semi-educated, but economically unproductive population might make for some splendid violent mass demonstrations.
So there we have it, at least 35% of my little corner of the country is absolutely dependent upon the Government teat for their very survival. The government must keep borrowing money to spend it, the consequences of not doing so would be fatal. Ironically, the government is kind of like a severely addicted crack-head. He knows that if he keeps smoking crack, he is going to die in a couple of years. But if he stops today, he will most definitely die of withdraw in a week. At least…that is how I look at this situation.
As always, opinions and comments are most welcomed!

nice post. thanks.
That 35% dependency becomes frightening I think when you consider the ramifications of reaching the debt ceiling. What is going to happen in the event the ceiling is increased? Even greater dependency? Will it stay the same? It certainly won’t shrink. And if the debt ceiling isn’t raised will that mean money will not be borrowed to pay those 35%? That’s a lot of people and the uncertainty alone is stressful, to say the least.
Thanks for the comment, Dmedia. I think the government is stuck between a rock and a hard place, there is no easy way out of this situation.
The tongue of idle persons is never idle.
Nice topic – respect !
Debt ceiling my ass.
All these people who have a religious faith in the “science” of global warming are so scientifically ignorant they don’t even know what an exponential number is.
Demand for government handouts is exponential. Supply of the productivity that funds those handouts is linear.
Socialism is unsustainable on its face.
It will end very, very badly, and sooner rather than later.
Lower all taxes while we still have a United States of America.
When this Old World starts getting you down. From Pollution the cost of OIL, Heating Fuel,The Fuel you put in your Vehicles, You Electric Bills from
cooling air conditioners and lights not to speak of the Evil. The TAX that all Governments Federal, State, County and City put on everything they can thing of.
They are supposed to serve us. Not put a burden on its people. That they are elected to serve all the people you, not their own Pocket Books.
The Wicked keep putting higher taxes on everything. Making it a Heavy Burden on many that are already struggling just to put food on the table.
Too many Americans have lost their home to the tax collector or to foreclosures from the unjust bankers greed. More are out of work and lost their homes then in the GREAT DEPRESSION, in the last ten years. All Americans and many Nations need good jobs and more of them. Not more TAXES.
All Taxes need to be lowered now while there is still time to save America.
There is a Industry that will employ workers and is growing by more then 50% every year. There is a clear way for all up on the roof the Sun Light is free fuel from GOD. Some wicked in Government have been backing Coal, Oil, Gas and the Nuclear industries for too many years.
These kickbacks to them were called Subsidizing Industry Technology. Most all Wise Men and smart Economist and Environmentalists call this padding their pockets and subsidizing back to the
Stone Age.
The best deal would be to lower Taxes for all this is not the Roman Empire.
The Chinese Know Renewable Energy is a good thing. Most of the rest of the World is still a slave to Oil, Coal and Nuclear Power. All the Governments of the World now know it is wise to use Renewable Energy it is the Local Governments that are a little slow to learn what is best for all not just there pocket book.
They fear people going off the grid all that tax money they will no longer be able to take from you. Wind and Solar Farms are growing all over the Earth. This could have happened years ago if the greedy wicked were stopped by the Real Good.
The Freedom to get your own Power from the Wind and Sun, Solar Energy has been there for years. Are Libraries and Schools should have been the first to have gone Solar and Renewable Energy. And why are they not? Churches are all over the Planet. They are going to Solar Energy.
Thank GOD for the Pioneers like John Schaeffer that Started Real Goods The first and Best catalog for Renewable Energy and Scientist Bill Young at the FSEC Florida Solar Energy Center and Monica D. Key Lindbergh for many years wrote to our legislators promoting Solar and Renewable Energy and many others.
These Pioneers helped put Wind, Solar And Renewable Energy in the Spotlight for all the World to see.
The Great Scientist Albert Einstein Stared it with a Dream that the day would come that all the World would use Solar Energy. His discovery of the law of the Photoelectric Effect won him the Nobel Prize in Physics. We still do not teach this to our young.
GOD Bless all that help tell this to the World
All Taxes need to be lowered cut in half or there will be a lot more Poor and needy and not in just other countries. This coming year the World will see hunger like never before. More then 100 million will be sick from malnutrition going with out food. Taxing the poor and taking there Land away from them is Wicked.
Lower taxes for all Americans will create more JOBS. Only the wicked look to tax everything.
Very soon the Rich will become the Poor.
If your Legislature will not lower Taxes vote them out of office and VOTE in someone that will Lower your Taxes.
GOD Bless
The Lord’s Little Helper
